The special US Navy Mark 12 Mod 0 SPR (Special Purpose Rifle) was fielded by American special operations forces during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Originally designated as the Special Purpose Receiver, the system eventually evolved into a standalone weapon now known as the Special Purpose Rifle – Mk 12. This designation is used by both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army.

The weapon used by U.S. Army and Navy special operations units is a heavily modified version of the well-known AR-15/M16 platform. It is chambered for the standard .223 Rem cartridge and serves in the role of a designated marksman rifle.

The SPR program was originally designed by Mark Westrom, current president of Armalite, during his time at Rock Island Arsenal. It was developed in response to the need of special forces for a weapon with greater range than the M4 carbine, yet shorter than the standard M16A2/A4. This development built upon the SOPMOD Block II program and the "Recon Rifle" concept used by Navy SEALs.
